Guide: Fitting an S15 air box in an S13/180sx

Recommended Posts

Fitting an S15 box is a fairly simple process, but takes a little time.

To do it properly, you must weld brackets in place, but it can be held in place using zip ties if need be.

I've listed both installation processes.

Pros:

  • Retains the use of the stock S13 intake pipe, hence it does not affect the pollution emissions gear
  • The S15 box doesn't use a resonator chamber (the blob that attaches to the S13 box with a hose) for sound emissions
  • The box is newer, hence usually in better condition
  • The S15 was Australian-delivered, so parts can be ordered through Nissan
  • The design appears as though it would flow better than the S13 box

Cons:

  • You can't use the S15 snorkel, nor an S13 one. It's a DIY job.
  • No resonator chamber might be an issue for a smog test if you get a super-anal-asshole
  • It doesn't bolt into the stock S13 mounts

'Permanent' Installation Process:

  1. Cut a length of 25mm square tube steel to be the width of the box
  2. Drill two holes in the tube that line up with the rubber plugs on the bottom of the air box, and push the tube onto the box
  3. Cut a 90 degree piece of steel about 2cm wide
  4. Install the AFM
  5. Remove the lower mount for the S13 box from the chassis. If you're careful, it will be in adequate condition to reattach later on if desired
  6. Pop the box in appropriate space in the engine bay
  7. Attach the S13 intake pipe to the AFM and position the box so it clears the hotpipe and bonnet
  8. Mark where the square tube meets the chassis
  9. Remove the air box
  10. Disconnect the battery terminals
  11. Position the square tube where marked, weld in place and test-fit the box
  12. With the box in the correct position, align the 90 degree bracket under the box's top mounting tab, with the other end hard up against the chassis
  13. Mark the bracket's position on the chassis and remove the box
  14. Position the bracket where marked, weld in place and test-fit the box
  15. Mark the position of the box's mount hole on the bracket, and remove the box
  16. Drill the hole where marked and either tap it, or weld a nut [that matches the bolt] underneath the hole
  17. Remove the box, clean all the welds, prime, spray and refit

'Temporary' Installation Process:

  1. Loop zipties through the bottom mount holes of the S15 box
  2. Thread both ends through the bottom mount bracket for the S13 box and link together
  3. Pull the zip ties tight
  4. Loop zip ties through the top mount hole and the upper S13 box mount
  5. Pull the zip ties firm
  6. Loop zip ties through the top mount hole and the loom for the relay box near the passenger light
  7. Pull the zip ties firm
  8. Equally tighten both ties attached to the S15 upper mount hole

Sure, I can take some, but you'll have to wait until the weekend. Car isn't located where I live.
